The year was 1984. Ronald Regan was the president and we worried that the world was going to blow up in a nuclear war with the U.S.S.R. At the movie theater Beverly Hills Cop, Ghost Busters and Terminator were box office hits. Airwolf was on TV and I’m still tortured by the theme song echoing in my head. Prince, which he was still known as, released Purple Rain and I had just been to my first Grateful Dead show, that summer at the Ventura county fairgrounds. I had just started high school and my fellow students were wearing RELAX shirts while the Madwannabies were out in full force. The hairspray Metal bands like Ratt, and Motley Crue, were also making their impression on the hair and clothing habits of some but lucky none seemed to mimic Poison. My fashion statement was the same, as it had been and would remain for another decade at least; concert jersey, Levi 501′s and Vans, except for a short time when unlaced hi-tops were my choice for kicks. If you were smoking in the boys room, you could get a pack of Players cigarettes for $1.00 at the gas station down the street from Monroe High School, even though I was only 15 and a pack of Funions & large Coke for less than a buck at 7-11.
My friends still couldn’t see how cool computers were. So in between skateboarding and playing guitar, I was playing computer RPG’s (Role Playing Games) by myself. Back then, (hey you kids, stay off my lawn!) there still weren’t any games you could play online with other people except some text games that were on BBS’s

While I finish up an article I’m working on for this blog, I wanted to share with you one of my other loves, skateboarding. It’s too late to bore you with my long history of skateboarding so I’ll just say that I started skateboarding over 30 years ago. I saw Tony Hawk skate when he was still an amateur when we were 13.
The following video is from a contest that is being held at a private skatepark in Los Angeles called The Berrics. This is the forth year of Battle At The Berrics and this year it’s U.S. vs Them. Each round of this elimination bracket style contest has one of the best riders from the U.S. vs one of the best riders from another country. The video I’m posting has one of my favorites, Chris Cole (The US) vs Willow (Germany). The way it works is kind of like the basketball game HORSE except this is called SKATE. One guy does a trick and then the other guy has to match his trick. If he fails to land the trick, he gets one letter of the work SKATE. If the guy who goes first doesn’t make his trick, control of the tricks goes to the other player. This goes on until one of the players had all the letters in SKATE and loses. This is the first round for both Chris Cole & Willow. Whomever wins gets to go on to a second round vs another round 1 winner. The other player gets to go home. Hope you enjoy it.
[NSFW Warning: There are a couple of F bombs dropped when someone misses his trick]
Chris Cole: REGULAR
Willow: REGULAR

I know I don’t get a ton of traffic, but I also know from my stats there are a few of you who do come by from time to time. So I just wanted to let you know what happened here.
